10 Creative Web Design Trends 2021

Recently, we looked at graphic design trends for this year. This time, we wanted to take a closer look at web design trends 2021. This is a great way to get some fresh ideas if you’re looking to redesign your website, so let’s dive straight into it!

Web Design Trends

1. Bold colours

As we mentioned in our previous blog, primary colours are really on-trend this year, including web design. Particularly, red, blue and yellow seem to be designers’ favourites this year. These are often paired with contrasting colours to create a nostalgic, yet very vibrant 90s comic-style vibe. It really goes without saying that such trends really appeal to a younger audience and create a lot of excitement for the visitor.

2. Light colours

If you find bright and bold colours to be too intense, you’ll be happy to know that lighter colours are also a popular 2021 web design trend. The great thing about using these in digital design rather than print is that they don’t lose their richness and actually create a soothing effect for the visitor. For more streamlined design across all of your business, you can choose some brighter accent colours to use in print, while keeping your website a little more muted.

3. Basic shapes and 80s/90s throwback

There really seems to be a sense of nostalgia throughout design trends for 2021 and that also includes web design. 2D, one dimensional shapes are making a comeback. Such designs often utilise sticker-like text, bright and bold colours and, while seemingly lacking nuance, they are very effective in drawing the visitors’ attention.

4. Playful, animated text

Text is really becoming more of a graphic design element with this trend. You may notice a lot more animations within text this year, rather than the typical, horizontal direction we’re used to seeing. Or, for example, in the above screenshot, the text is still horizontal but used as part of the design rather than solely to be read. We can also expect to see a lot more use of emojis within the website text, which really reflect the important role social media plays in our lives.

5. Black and white illustrations and black outlines

Yet another throwback that has taken on a more modern form, black and white illustrations and outlines are really loved by designers this year. Way back, we were unable to print in colour, so hand-drawn, black and white graphics played an important role in breaking up large blocks of text. In its more modern form, it’s a very simple, eye-catching and quirky design. Similarly, use of black outlines in different thicknesses also provide a more geometric structure to your site and easily draw attention to where you want your visitors to look.

6. Serif fonts

Serif fonts are not at all new to the web design scene – they are an eye-catching font family that is great for titles and hero text, where it is larger and clear to read. In fact, we use the Noto Serif font for our website! For this year, however, designers are getting creative with bolder and more decorated Serif fonts. Thanks to higher resolution of our screens, these fonts no longer risk looking cluttered and difficult to read, allowing for more experimentation in web design.

7. 3D Simulations

A complete contrast to the 2D and basic shapes trend, 3D simulation is a 2021 web design trend that has largely been inspired by increase in online shopping. Particularly popular with clothing stores, this trend allows us to explore the items in much more detail, see how they might look on someone else and more. We think that 3D simulations will only become more popular in e-commerce in the near future.

8. Creative menus

One of the key parts of a website, menus have recently experienced a much deserved attention in web design trends 2021. Hover galleries have become more popular, where the menu reveals more of the content as you hover over it. This adds another layer of engagement to your website and makes the different sections more enticing to your customers.

9. Collages

Reflecting popular social media trends we see on Instagram stories, posts and more, collages have made their way into the world of web design. This is a great way to showcase multiple aspects of your offering all at once and it can also create a nice, quirky design feel that we have become accustomed to through social media.

10. Surrealism

Any time we experience culturally significant and tumultuous events, like most of 2020 and also this year, we can see a shift towards escapism in art. Surrealism is one of those expressions and it has made its way into this year’s web design trends. Abstract, counter-intuitive elements, creative shapes, colours and textures are all great ways to add a touch of surrealism to your website. This can be particularly effective if your website is already in some way associated with art or non-conformity, so we often see this in fashion designer websites, for example.
